"Hot to Go!" singer Chappell Roan suffers from bipolar II and shared in a recent interview that she was experiencing hypomania during the start of her rise to TikTok fame.
Chappell Roan became a household name overnight, rising quickly to fame and popularity as one of the world’s biggest pop stars in recent months.
But the journey hasn’t been an easy one, especially given that she struggles with serious mental health issues that have been exacerbated by all the fame and attention.
Roan recently opened up about such challenges in an interview with Rolling Stone. The singer shared that she suffers from bipolar II, and in 2021 — as she first began to gain a following for her music and TikTok content — she experienced a period of hypomania that was heightened by her growing TikTok presence.
Hypomania refers to a period of abnormally high energy, activity levels, and mood, though it’s a milder form of mood elevation than mania, according to the Cleveland Clinic. It’s a common symptom of bipolar II.
During this period, Roan posted frequently on TikTok and watched her followers rise, though she concedes that her content at the time didn’t stem from a healthy place.
“I wasn’t sleeping,” she said in the interview. “I was on the incorrect meds. I had the energy and the delusion and realized that this app is fueled off of mental illness. Straight up.”
The artist told Rolling Stone that she also experienced periods of suicidality, and she entered outpatient therapy in 2022.
Since then, Roan’s fame has grown exponentially, and she recently made headlines for posting a statement on social media about unacceptable and inappropriate behavior from fans. In the Rolling Stone interview, she spoke of the incidents that led to that statement, including being berated, assaulted, and harassed by fans while out in public.
“Understand this: I embrace the success of the project, the love I feel, and the gratitude I have,” she wrote on Instagram. “What I do not accept are creepy people, being touched, and being followed.”
