Does Coffee Improve Orgasms? Experts Weigh In

TikTokers say drinking coffee before sex or masturbation helps them to reach more intense or a higher number of orgasms. While there is no hard evidence behind the TikTok hack, expectations can improve sexual performance, according to doctors.

Medical misinformation is rampant on TikTok, with the platform pushing content promoting eating disorders and self-harm to teens every 39 seconds. Some trends like bone smashing or do-it-yourself dentistry are especially dangerous, as they can cause irreversible damage.

In a recent TikTok trend, users are testing the hypothesis whether coffee can improve orgasms. One video features a TikToker who allegedly drinks three shots of espresso before having some fun.

"That was wild," she says on camera, implying that the coffee hack was successful.

Do coffee drinkers have more fun?

Dr. Susan Milstein, a certified sexologist and a diplomate of the American Board of Sexology, says there is no conclusive evidence that drinking coffee can lead to better orgasms or more orgasms.

"Because it is a stimulant, caffeine can help to increase blood flow to the genitals. For men, this can help with getting erections. For women, this can help with vaginal lubrication. But flood flow doesn't guarantee an orgasm. There are plenty of folks who have great blood flow to their genitals but still struggle to orgasm," she tells Healthnews.

However, when it comes to coffee and vagina lubrication, things get tricky. Milsten points out that hydration can help increase blood flow to the genitals. Although coffee has water in it, the caffeine in coffee — depending on the amount — can lead to dehydration. This may limit women's ability to lubricate and can negatively impact a man's ability to get an erection.

Sexual performance is influenced by expectations, which may explain the coffee hack.

If you believe that drinking coffee prior to sex will lead to a better orgasm, then you may just experience that. But that's more because of mindset than the actual coffee.

Dr. Karan Rajan, a surgeon with the UK's National Health Service, said in a TikTok video that caffeine's stimulatory effects could increase focus, heart rate, and alertness, triggering people to be more active.

Rajan referred to a 2005 study in rats, which found that caffeine increased female rats' sexual motivation. He noted there is no real hard science to suggest that coffee improves orgasms in humans but called the experiment benign.

Rajan said, "So, do whatever you need to float your erogenous boat."

Whether coffee can improve orgasms or not, your cup of joe may have multiple health benefits. Moderate consumption has been linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, several cancers, including endometrial and liver cancers, and type 2 diabetes.
