Recall Alert for Costco, Whole Foods Broths

Though the companies have received no reports of illness, Costco and Whole Foods say the recalled organic chicken and beef broth products could spoil early due to microbial contamination.

Whole Foods Market and Costco are voluntarily recalling organic chicken and beef broth products due to potential contamination. The Costco recall involves organic chicken bone broth, and the Whole Foods Market recall includes three 365 by Whole Foods Market organic chicken and beef broth products.

The recalled products may have the potential for microbial contamination due to a lack of sterility assurance, according to Treehouse Foods, Inc., the product’s supplier. Though not a health or safety concern at this time, the recalled broths may spoil prematurely, the company says.

The recalled broths were sold from 7/24/2022 to 9/21/2023. Whole Foods has removed all products impacted by the recall from store shelves.

The company says customers who purchased the recalled broth can present a valid receipt and receive a full refund.

In addition to the Whole Foods recall, TreeHouse Foods is also recalling Costco organic chicken bone broth sold from 9/8/2022 through 9/22/2023 because of the potential for microbial contamination. Although no illnesses have been reported, TreeHouse Foods says this contamination may shorten the product’s shelf life with potential early spoilage.

TreeHouse Foods says people should not use products affected by the Costco recall and either throw the item away or return the broth to Costco for a full refund.

In addition to Whole Foods and Costco, Topco Associates has issued a recall for Food Club Beef Broth, and Full Circle Organic Beef Broth sold at Big Y stores for potential microbial contamination.
