With the rise of a new class of weight loss drugs, there comes a fast fall. Dozens of TikTokkers found their accounts suspended due to their weight loss drug promotions.
The social media platform has decided to suspend the accounts of content creators who frequently post and make money through telehealth partnerships and promote the use of GLP-1s and other weight loss drugs.
TikTok spokesperson, Jessica Allen, told STAT News, "We remove content and ban accounts that promote disordered eating or dangerous weight loss behaviors and do not permit ads for weight loss drugs or supplements."
The community guidelines don't list restrictions on FDA-regulated medications but they do say that "showing or promoting disordered eating," is prohibited. TikTok says the majority of accounts were already banned.
Drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic gained significant popularity on the social media platform but now, TikTok hopes to address the harm and misinformation certain creators may have encouraged.
